  • 4 large russet potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese freshly grated
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese freshly grated
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • ¼ cup fresh chives finely chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter.
  • Melt the remaining butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat and sauté the minced garlic for 1-2 minutes.
  • Stir in the heavy cream and whole milk, then add onion powder, sea salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Simmer for a few minutes and remove from heat.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, pour half of the cream mixture over them, and sprinkle half of the cheddar and Gruyère cheeses on top.
  • Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheeses, ensuring a generous cheese topping.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender and the top is golden brown.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes before garnishing with chopped chives and serve warm.
