Ingredients

6 small to medium-sized sweet onions

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spice preference)

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup panko breadcrumbs

Cooking spray or olive oil for misting

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and cut off the tops, leaving the root end intact. Carefully slice into the onion from the top down (without cutting all the way through) in four sections to create “petals.” Soak the onions in cold water for 30 minutes to help them open up.

Make the Coating: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.

Breading Process: Drain the soaked onions and pat them dry with paper towels. Dip each onion in the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Then dredge it in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring all petals are coated. Return to the buttermilk briefly, then roll in panko breadcrumbs to ensure a crispy exterior.

Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 to 5 minutes.

Arrange and Cook: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded mini onions in a single layer in the basket (you may need to do this in batches depending on the size of your air fryer). Mist the tops of the onions with a little cooking spray or olive oil.

Air Fry: Cook the onions in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes, checking halfway through to shake them for even cooking. The onions should be golden and crispy when done.

Serve: Remove the onions carefully and let them cool slightly. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce (like ranch or spicy mayo) and enjoy this delightful appetizer!
