Ingredients

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup rice vinegar

1/4 cup sugar (brown sugar for a deeper flavor)

2 tablespoons cornstarch

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced

2 tablespoons sesame oil

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust for heat)

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon water

1 tablespoon green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar until the sugar dissolves completely.

In a separate small bowl, combine the cornstarch with water to make a slurry. This will help thicken the sauce.

Heat the sesame oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Pour in the soy sauce mixture into the saucepan and bring it to a gentle simmer.

Stir in the red pepper flakes and hoisin sauce, allowing the flavors to meld for about 3-4 minutes.

Gradually add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce, continuously stirring until the sauce thickens (about 2-3 minutes).

Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

Serve over crispy fried chicken, tofu, or vegetables and garnish with sliced green onions.
