Ingredients

1 loaf of day-old brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

8 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Fresh berries for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, add the cubed bread. You can either place it in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish or keep it in the bowl for easier mixing later.

Make the Custard: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until well combined.

Combine: Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts evenly over the top. Gently mix to combine but avoid breaking the bread too much.

Chill: Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight (or at least for 4 hours) to allow the bread to soak up all the custard.

Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the fridge and uncover. Drizzle the maple syrup over the top. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Serve: Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and top with fresh berries if desired.

              Prep Time: 25 minutes | Total Time: 1 hour | Servings: 8
