Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup milk

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup raisins or currants (optional)

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

1 egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water for glazing)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg (if using).

Cream the butter: In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Add the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.

Combine mixtures: Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. If desired, fold in the raisins or currants for added sweetness and texture.

Shape the buns: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it for about a minute until it comes together. Pat the dough into a round about 1-inch thick. Cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter to form rounds.

Prepare for baking: Place the shaped buns onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the egg wash to achieve a golden finish.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the buns are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving warm with butter or your favorite jam.
